Hi Russ and welcome aboard! Bases look great and your 19s still look super nice.

Guess I will never understand why Altec ever put such trashy bases on these to begin with.
Looks like you raised them an inch or so higher too and not a bad idea to get them up a bit for the vacuume.
Did you use real wood or Particle board like the originals?

I would love to come up with a better idea for the grill attachments as well but so far all the ones I have tried all have some sort of drawback where the 19s are concerned.

    Have fun here.

My SWAG is bean counters plus the lossy material helps damp its cavity resonance.

Not to mention get them closer to ear height. Added a little trim moulding to spiff it up a bit to boot. Nice attention to detail. forums

Velcro with locating pins works for me since the material acts as a lossy coupling, ~'floating' the grills.

Thanks for the friendly welcome guys!
(Dave & Gary, I knew I'd find you two Altec-freaks here!)
Awhile back I did make replacement pedestals from some 2X6 material and after having them on the speakers for a year or two was not too happy with them so I made a second set as you see in the pic. It is 2x4 lumber with 1x1 mounted on the bottom. Into this 1x1 lumber on the bottom I've mounted brass nylon-capped feet in each corner...can't see them for the carpeting...furniture feet actually. The pedestals are mounted on the bottom with little "L" brackets & wood screws. There is rubber strip in between the speaker bottom and the pedestal. The "goofholes" have since been filled with wood putty. I know, very sloppy but everything looks good on the outside and the pedestals are super-strong! Obviously I mounted new banana plug connectors on each pedestal back. I simply ran the leads through the exsisting holes where the tiny spring connectors used to be. Another thing I did was add a bead of latex clear caulk along the internal seams of the upper & lower cabinet sections. I don't know if it makes a difference but I think the cabinets (except the vent) should be completely airtight and before I did this you could actually slip a sheet of notebook paper into the gaps! Sorry if the pics come out to big.6

**** ! Im sorry the pics above came out too big! One thing I forgot to mention is that the banana plug mountings have not yet been properly mounted into the pedestals! I will cutout some material so they flush mount but for now are mounted up usings some screw spacers.(the white things)

Yea Russ, lots of good people here.

Real nice job on the bases and it is good to seal the seams.
There has been plenty of discussion regarding 19 cabinet upgrades but I am not sure we can search back that far to find it. To sum it up, "bracing inside". 19s are a pretty nice speaker just as they are but strenghthening the interior large panels and possibly locking the baffle to the rear panel appears to be good science.

Like anything else, if they sound good to your ears then sit back and enjoy.

    Gary
